COMPAQ'S LTE/286: THE POWER NOTEBOOK COMPUTER
_______
SUMMARY
On October 16, Compaq announced two notebook computers with significant
functionality, the LTE/286 and the LTE. The LTE/286 weighs only 6.7 pounds and
measures just 1.9" by 8 1/2" by 11". It comes equipped with 640 KB of RAM, a
40 MB hard disk, a 3.5-inch floppy drive, and an 80286 processor. This
configuration is priced at $4,999 and is available in limited quantities. Its
low resolution 640 x 200 screen appears to be its key weakness. The LTE has
similar specifications except that it is based on a 9.54-MHz 80C86 processor
and only supports the 20 MB fixed disk. Its price is $2,999.
We think the LTE and the LTE/286 are the first notebook computers to offer
sufficient features to meet the needs of most mobile computer users. These
machines should reinforce Compaq's image of offering the latest technology for
premium prices. However, since we haven't seen their screens or keyboards, we
cannot be sure of their overall functionality.

SITUATION: SPECIFICATIONS OF THE LTE/286
One of the hottest segments of the portable computer market is the "notebook"
category. NEC popularized this category a year ago with the announcement of
the UltraLite, a 4.4 pound XT-compatible. In July of this year, Zenith
introduced its notebook system, the MinisPort, which features a 2-inch micro
floppy disk drive and weighs 5.8 pounds. Several other notebook systems have
been introduced in the Japanese market this year also, including a 5.5 pound
system from Toshiba that has a standard 3.5-inch floppy drive.
On October 16, Compaq announced two "lite" notebook computers, the LTE/286 and
the LTE. The LTE/286 weighs 6.7 pounds and measures just 8 1/2 by 11 inches,
and is 1.9 inches high. It is the first U.S. notebook computer to offer a
80C286 processor, a 40 MB hard disk and a standard 3.5-inch floppy. Battery
life also appears to be good for a DOS portable; Compaq estimates 3.5 hours.
The backlit screen appears to be the weak link, as its resolution is only 640 x
200 pixels. The computer is priced at $4,999 ($4,499 for the 20 MB version).
The LTE has similar specifications except that it is based on a 9.54-MHz 80C86
processor and is priced at $2,999 for the 20 MB version.
For the purpose of this document, we will call the LTE and LTE/286 "notebook"
computers, since that is what the industry is calling them. But since they are
heavier and thicker than other notebook computers, they perhaps should be
considered "laptops."
These notebook computers have limitations, such as poor screen display and
limited expansion. Therefore, they are not directly comparable to the
fully-functional Macintosh Portable. However, we will do more analysis of the
LTE/286 since it comes closer to the functionality of the Macintosh Portable
than the LTE does.
Compaq is differentiating itself from its competitors by offering a standard
diskette drive. The two leading Notebook computers, the Zenith MinisPort and
the NEC UltraLite, both use non-standard removable media, which we believe has
limited their acceptance. (The Toshiba T1000, which does offer a 3.5 inch
diskette drive, is often not considered a notebook computer because of its
bulkier size.) Furthermore, the LTE/286's fixed disk drive and 80286 processor
are advantages over the Zenith, NEC, and Toshiba machines.
Processor RAM Disk Graphics Weight Dimensions Price
HxWxD (in)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Compaq LTE 8086 (9.5-MHz) 640KB 20MB CGA 6.7 lbs 1.9x11x8.5 $2,999
Cmpaq LTE/286 80286 (12-MHz) 640KB 40MB CGA 6.7 lbs 1.9x11x8.5 $4,999
MinisPort 8088 (8-MHz) 1MB 720KB CGA 5.9 lbs 1.3x12.4x9.8 $1,999
NEC UltraLite V-30 (9.8-MHz) 640KB 1MB CGA 4.4 lbs 1.4x11.8x8.3 $2,499
Toshiba T1000 8088 (4.7-MHz) 512KB 720KB CGA 6.4 lbs 2x12.2x11 $999
The price of the LTE/286 is relatively expensive compared to the other systems.
Since many people consider notebook computers for their second computer, in
addition to the one on the desktop, the $4,999 price could make it difficult to
justify.
Compaq has contracted with the Japanese company Citizen Watch Ltd. to
manufacture the LTE and LTE/286 for international markets. The contract is the
first time Compaq has asked another company to build its computers. Compaq
says that it contracted with Citizen in order to meet demand for these notebook
computers. Citizen does not currently make personal computers. It will learn
how to assemble them under its agreement with Compaq.

SCENARIO: COMPAQ REINFORCES IMAGE OF OFFERING LEADING EDGE TECHNOLOGY
We think the LTE/286 is the first notebook computer that offers sufficient
features to meet the needs of most mobile computer users. Until now, notebook
computers used non-standard storage which made moving data between them and
desktop systems awkward. The Compaq LTE/286's 3.5 inch diskette drive removes
that barrier, and gives additional power with its 80286 processor and 40 MB
hard disk. These advancements in technology will further enhance Compaq's
reputation for being on the cutting edge of new technology.
Dataquest and InfoCorp predict that these machines will be successful.
Combining the LTE and the LTE/286, Dataquest estimates that Compaq will sell
around 90,000 units worldwide in 1990. InfoCorp estimates that Compaq will
sell around 55,000 units. We believe that the LTE/286 will cannabalize some of
SLT/286's sales, although the SLT/286 still has advantages in screen resolution
(640 x 480) and support for the desktop expansion base. We expect the SLT/286
to eventually be enhanced with a 386SX processor.
Besides price, the other drawback of the LTE/286 (and the LTE) is the screen
resolution. 640 x 200 is so low that Microsoft Windows (and OS/2 Presentation
Manager) can only run in black and white mode. So this is not a machine that
has been designed to run graphical environments.
____________
IMPLICATIONS
* Not a Macintosh. The LTE/286 offers many attractive features. However, it
does not have the functionality of the Macintosh Portable. It cannot run a
graphical environment very well (slow screen updating, no built-in pointing
device). Its screen is far inferior to the Macintosh Portable's screen. Its
battery life lasts about half as long as the Macintosh battery. It doesn't
have networking built in. And most importantly, it is not a Macintosh, and so
it lacks the power, integration, and intuitiveness of the Macintosh.
* Diversity of mobile computers. Compaq now has two notebook computers (LTE
and LTE/286), a portable (SLT/286), and a transportable (Portable 386). Each
of these machines appeals to a different segment of the market, depending on
the customer's desire for portability vs. functionality. Companies which are
trying to compete in the mobile computer market face the challenging task of
providing a wider variety of machines than in the past.
* Expectation have been raised. Although the initial pricing of the Compaq
notebooks is sufficiently high to limit the immediate impact on competitor's
notebooks, a new level of expectations has been set by which competitive
notebooks will now be judged. Companies planning on introducing notebook
computers in the future will have to differentiate themselves from Compaq's
offering.
* Notebook computer sales will accelerate. Before the Compaq LTE/286,
notebook computers offered limited functionality. Disk storage, memory
capacity, keyboard, and processor speed had been compromised in favor of weight
and size. The lack of standard floppy disk drives was one of the main
limitations of these machines, and made them cumbersome to use. As machines
like the Compaq LTE/286 become available (especially ones with better screen
displays than the LTE/286), we expect notebook computers to have higher unit
sales than larger portables.
